BIOPHLIC DESIGN ART + PHOTOGRAPHY

When we have the opportunity to be closer to nature, it benefits our bodies, minds and spirit tremendously. Sometimes you can’t go for a hike in the forest or walk along the shore at the beach but you can bring it into your daily life and reap the same benefits. We can show you how to implement indirect biophilic design with art and photography. It’s all about connection and placement and it’s incredibly subtle yet amazinly effective.

We have a series of indirect biophilic art and photography pieces of our collection we’d love to share with you.

You can buy them here at Wescover!

HISTORY BIOPHILIC DESIGN
The term biophilia, derived from the Greek terminologies of ‘philia’ as love and ‘bio’ as nature, refers to “the love of nature or life.” It focuses on human’s innate attraction to nature and natural processes. It suggests that we all have a genetic connection to the natural world built up through hundreds of thousands of years of living in agrarian settings. Biophilic design can be traced all the way back to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon; the ancient world built by King Nebuchadnezzar II for his wife Queen Amytis. The Queen missed the green valleys and hills of her Median homeland, so the King built a towering series of tiered gardens with a wide variety of flowers, shrubs, vines and trees for her.

Erich Fromm in 1973 wrote a book called The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness. He talked about passionate love of live and all that is alive. That paved the way for Edward O Wilson, American biologist who coined the term Biophilia in the 1980’s when he observed how people were being disconnected with the natural world. With high rates of migration to urban settings in the developed world and soaring rates in developing countries – Biophilia is of ever increasing importance to our health and well-being in the built environment.

Biophilic Design uses these ideas as principles to create a human centered approach that when applied improves many of the spaces that we live and work in today, with numerous benefits to our health and well-being. It is extremely beneficial for interior designers to design and stage homes as prospective buyers sense an immediate welcoming effect, a sense of calm and a true connection to the home when elements of biophilic design is incorporated.
